The Island of Madeira is famous for its “Levada” walks. Levadas are man made water courses, that follow the contours of the very steep hillsides of Madeira so that the hillside farmers can irrigate their terraces. This levada is the Levada do Caniço.
The walk is one of the best for an all round experience. It is not too long, it is easy to get to from the capital Funchal. It has a waterfall, a tunnel, caves and enough high and exposed places to make it interesting, and the scenery of the Porto Novo valley is stunning.
There is a steep and winding climb from Camacha down to the Levada, and a steep walk down to the bus stop in Assomada, after the Levada.
