Zaros - Nida plateau

Walking tour from the village of Zaros to the Nidaplateau.
The tour start at hotel Keramos, one of the finest village hotels in Crete. After the copious breakfast the tour start in the center of the village in the direction of the Votomos lake. It's the only place in Crete where they breed freshwater fish.
Next to the tavern at the edge of the lake, starts the E4 route to the gorge of Agios Nikolaos.
At the 'door' of the gorge follow the uphilling route at the west of the gorge, to cross the top of the gorge.
Passing the remainings of a miners settlement you find a spring with potable water.
Furhter on, at the end of the gorge you cross a small river with potable water. Here the E4 trais splits up.
To the left you can follow the single trail straight to the Nida plateau or, straight ahead, passing the chapel of Agios Ioannes (with a rest area in the Rouvas wood)you can follow an unsurfaced jeeptrack leading, at the next intersection, to Asites (E4 trail right handed) or, following the trail lefthanded, to the Nida plateau.
